Gran Canaria, the largest of the Canary Islands west of the mainland of Spanish mainland, hosts about 10 nude or clothing-optional beaches. Some say the most popular is Maspalomas, where the whole middle section of the beach is clothing optional, which really means nudist. Clothed walkers, nudists and surfers mix freely on the beach. A thriving gay section is bordered by dune reminiscent of the Sahara Desert's rolling terrain. The dunes actually are made of finely ground shells, reaching 40 get high and spreading over 800 acres. The beaches are noted for their crystal clear, clean water. Maspalomas in particular offers excellent facilities, including beach bars. Gran Canaria lies about 90 miles west of European and 150 miles north of Africa. The island is mainly hot and dry all year round, making it an ideal winter holiday destination. There is relatively little variation in temperature. I'd love to visit Gran Canaria. If you've visited, please share your experiences with others on the blog. In the meantime, here are a few photos of various beaches of Gran Canaria. Enjoy!
