Naked Bike Ride season is here!

Written By venus on Friday, June 7, 2013 | 11:35 PM

Today is the big day for World Naked Bike Ride events in the Northern Hemisphere. (Cities in the Southern Hemisphere, such as Melbourne, Australia, already have had their 2013 season because their summer is our winter.)

Bike riders in at least 11 cities in Europe and North America will participate today, and they'll be cycling nude in another two cities on Sunday.

Organizers of the World Naked Bike Ride say these rides are on the calendar for today: London, Barcelona, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans and Mexico City, as well as Portland and Eugene, Oregon; Montpelier, Vermont; and Guadalajara, Mexico. On Sunday rides are scheduled for San Diego and Brighton, England.

The following Saturday (June 15) brings another big batch of rides: Toronto; Madison, Wisconsin; Columbus, Ohio; Brussels, Belgium; and Bristol, Canterbury and Cardiff in the United Kingdom. The ride in Manchester, England, is scheduled for the preceding day, June 14.

Later this summer, events are scheduled for Amsterdam; York, England; Cork, Ireland; and St. Louis. I hope to attend the final event of the season, in Philadelphia on August 25.

(I'm sure I failed to mention rides in other cities. I didn't have scheduling information at hand for Seattle and San Francisco, for instance.)

So here's to the cyclists, joggers and skaters who take part in this summer's World Naked Bike Ride events. They're expressing their vision of a cleaner, safer environment and a body-positive world. And they're having great fun.
