LGBT membership in Congress expands

The new Congress, which was seated Thursday, is the most diverse in history. The Senate now has its first openly lesbian, Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat from Wisconsin.

Baldwin had served in the House of Representatives for several years, and has been replaced in her old district in Madison by another LGBT member of Congress, Mark Pocan.

Three other openly LGBT members also took their seats: Mark Takano of California, Sean Patrick Maloneyof New York, who are gay, and Krysten Sinema of Arizona, who is bisexual. They join two other gay representatives, Jared Polis of Colorado and David Cicilline of Rhode Island, who are incumbents. All LGBT members are Democrats.

Offsetting the gains was the retirement of Barney Frank of Massachusetts, a pioneer as one of the first two members of Congress in the late 1970s.
