The sunken World Discoverer cruise ship was abandoned in Roderick Bay in the Solomon Islands. Built in 1974, the ship has double-hulled construction capable of handling minor impacts with ice. The ship periodically traveled to polar regions to enable tourists to watch ice floes and glaciers. On April 30, 2000, the ship struck an uncharted reef in the Sandfly Passage of the Solomons. After the passengers were safely taken to shore by passenger ferry, the captain steered the listing ship into Roderick Bay and grounded it to avoid sinking. The ship remains there today.
