Here in eastern Pennsylvania, the winter has been mild for a second year in a row. The season's remaining snow clings to the shady sides of mountains or buildings. The white has become a sooty gray. Three weeks from now gardeners will be preparing their soil for the first seeds of the year: radishes, lettuce and spinach. So before the snow disappears altogether, this seems an appropriate time to look back on the winter and the men who don't mind shedding their clothes in the cold.

This final photo shows Antarctica at its warmest period--summer, which is now past its prime in the Southern Hemisphere. When we are enjoying our beach weather, the rocks beneath the man's feet will be blanketed in deep snow and utter darkness. Frostbite will be quick in coming to anyone foolish enough to be outdoors without heavy winter garb from head to toe.
