Politics: Framing an Issue

Most of the time democrats lose the debate. Not because of the fact don't support their argument, but mostly because they allow their opponents to frame the issue in such a manner that their facts don't fit the public's perception. Like the speaker of the House and the Senate Majority leader though, this is changing. John Edwards has recently called the sending of more troops "The McCain Doctrine". This frames the debate in a way which further associates the Iraq war with republicans, and highlights the differences between him and other potential candidates. This is a smart bit a strategy and one I hope he continues to employ all the way to a new address.

Politics: Post Election Recap

So the Poles are closed...Dems have the House and the Senate is too close to call although both Dems lead by very slim majorities. So lets take a look at what the night brought us.

Best win: Probably either of the two senate races in Montana or Virginia if the dems come out on top. The governors race right here in Mass would be a good one (only the second African American Governor EVER???) too. Right now though, I'm going with Chris Murphy over Nancy Johnson in the Connecticut 5th (I voted for her when I lived there? Shame on me). Her support for this terrible war coupled with her supporting the violation of our civil liberties (for which she made an attack ad about) makes this my favorite victory. "Hey Nancy, I wish I had a warrantless wire tap on your phone last night to hear you concede."

Worst Loss: Harold Ford Jr., Tennessee Senate. Ford ran a good campaign and was very competitive in a very red state, positioning himself well for the next TN senate seat that come up. so you may ask, "why is this such a bad loss"? Not because the loss is crushing or because it was one that the democrats needed to win, it was because Ford's opponent, Bob Corker, and the republican party really ran a dirt bag campaign. The nastiest of the nasty down in TN. People and groups who resort to tactics to get power, I believe it shows what they do in power. A direct correlation between dirt bag campaigning and corruption. So TN, congratulations and don't complain about what you reap when this is what you show.

Oh That sucks (not really): Lincoln Chaffee of RI, come pick up your prize. The moderate republican who opposed the war was booted solely for the (R) next to his name. The country wanted 2 party rule and because of that, you needed to go.

Promotion Day: Even if the Dems take the Senate the biggest promotion (and headlines) go to new Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi. First woman speaker of the house. Make us proud.

Big wins: Senator Ted Kennedy and New NY Governor Elliot Spitzer. You run opposed and pull 69%. Thanks not too shabby! (Honorable mention to Senator Hillary Clinton with 67%).

I don't care (ok I really do): Dems take 28 governor's offices. Not too shabby.

OK so what does all this mean? Hopefully good stuff, but I guess we'll see in 730 days.

The Color of things

How hard is it to find quality color men today? I know most of the color men today are former players, and when it comes to sports like Football or Hockey, they've probably taken one too many hits to the head. But seriously come on now. I've seen 2-3 times this football season where replays are shown numerous times which clearly show something, but the analyists can't see to see it for a good 5 minutes. Are they doing their hair? This is repeated all of the time on national and regional broadcasts. Its time to take away the fan favorites and start putting in people who can do the job.

Wow is all I can say. Probably the greatest victory in New Endland Revolution history occured today. Down 0-2 in agregate the revs rally with goals from Taylor Twellman and Pat Noonan to force penalty kicks right infront of our seats, which was highlighted by two saves and a laser goal from Matt Reis. You can watch the highlights here. My favorite part is when Reis stones Ivan Guerrero and screams at him to "Report That" in reference to his unfounded complaint about Shalrie Joseph.

Went to London, bought and moved into a new house, saw the revs qualify for the playoffs. Wow what a game! After a 6 hour drive to Rochester we saw a heck of a game. 0-0 after regulation and extra time. Revs miss two penalites to start the shoot out and the Rhinos miss 3,4 & 7. Great time had by all and a great effort by the team.

PATEC park was sweet and the Stampeed (Rochester Rhinos' supporters group) is an absolutly great buch of guys. Hopefully I'll have some picture up soon!

So over on SI.com they had Jimmy Tranina had a list of 10 things he would do if he was sports commissioner for a day. So I though, what whould I do if I were in charge. Here's what I came up with:

1) Let change NFL TV rules. Everyone gets 2 games at 1PM and 2 at 4PM. I don't like the pats so why do I have to watch them just because I live in Boston.

2) Change the start times for the NFL from 1PM to Noon. How many times do we see a team down 7 with :30 to go and in the red zone. Then just like that its time to switch to switch broadcasts so we can watch the warm ups of the home team.

3) Move the superbowl to norther Canada. Everyone loves games in the snow!

4) The team with the better spring training record gets home field in the World Series. Hey its just as stoopid as determining it based on one exhibition game.

5) Bring back the penalty shootout at the end of MLS regular season ties. Does anyone else care?

Julie and I attended our 3rd home game of the season this saturday in the pouring rain and Sleet (yes there was sleet). A win is always nice to see and as for the free hot chocolate offered in the second half? I've never seen anyone move so fast. Oh and if your watching the Fox World Sports Report I make an appearance for about 0.5 secons after Taylor Twellman scores his goal!

Just returned from our bus trip to the Meadowlands. We left at 11AM and Julie, Gus and I started tailgating with the other Midnight Riders around 3:30. Ryan and Heather joined us and we headed into the stadium around 7. Watched a good game, and while the Revs had the better of the play it ended in a 0-0 draw. We returned home about 2AM, and thank goodness for the bus, which provided a nice nap on the way back. We should have some pictures up soon.

Politics: Happy Indictment Day

That's right boys and girls today in indictment day in Texas (OK it was yesterday but still). House majority leader Tom Delay was indicted on a charge of "Criminal conspiracy". Sounds nice doesn't it? For those of you who don't know what he did he conspired to have corporations give money, which was funneled to the RNC then to state senate candidates, allegedly. This is in violation of Texas state law which does not allow companies to donate to state candidates. Am I happy that Tom Delay has been indicted....not really. What I really wish would happen is for the people whom he represents to wake up and see how bad this guy's politics are. He cuts social programs leaving poor people poorer, helping the rich by cutting their taxes, helps the white house run up HUGE deficits, all while weakening environmental laws making the world we live in as dirty as the money given to his candidates...Allegedly....

This is not new news, but I thought I would write about the game anyways. It was a whole lotta fun. Started tailgating about 2:30PM, Ryan showed up about 5. The seats were awsome (except that guy in 124, row 24, seat 10...that guy was a poser...dude its a football game your supposed to cheer), the giants had a couple of scores right in front of us. Politics: Is President Bush Saddam Hussein Light?

I'm sure it wasn't planned this way, but if you look how the first 5 years of this administration has developed, there are a whole lot of things which mirror the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, but to a lesser extend. Lets compare (note the leaders didn't actual do these things but they happened under their leader ship...I have to add these stupid disclaimers because someone will say "you said GWB leaked the name of a CIA agent but it wasn't actually him" and I know it wasn't really him but it happened under him):

SH jailed and torchered dissidents while GWB adds dissidents to terrorist watch lists and leaks names of undercover CIA agents to discredit his opponents

Members of SH Ba'th party were the only ones allowed to hold office in his administration while in GWB's administration if you are a crony of the president you get a cushy six figure job

SH started an illegal war by invading a sovereign country (Kuwait) while GWB started an illegal war by invading a sovereign country (Iraq)

SH thumbed his nose at the international community and developed WMD while GWB numbed his nose at the international community (and broke a treaty the US signed) and is developing a new nuclear bomb

wow those two are exactly the same!

Like many well informed people knew, this president hasn't made any one very safe. As shown report in the washington Post on 4/27/05, "The number of serious international terrorist incidents more than tripled last year" according to a US government report. So lets look at this 2004 was the worst year ever for terrorism. You know what the top year was before that? Yup 2003, followed by 2002 and 2001. So next time someone tries to tell you we're more safe with this president. Tell them the facts...PLEASE!!!!!

Do you ever watch the U.S. House on CSPAN? They're sitting there at 9PM wich is a great example of democracy in action...IF THERE WERE MORE THAN 10 people in the house. Am I missing something here?

Gas Milage

So I came back to my hotel room where the TV is set at CSPAN when you first turn it on, yes thats how they get they're 20 viewers per night, but maybe we should watch it more. Tonight was a presentation by Represtentative Jay Inslee (D-Washington). He was talking about gas milage on US cars. No big deal, cars today get better gas milage than they did 10 years ago right...well sort of. Now keep in mind this is just cars. Trucks were in a different category. In 1975 the 3 year moving average for miles per gallon was 15mi/gallon. With gas shortages and termoil in the midle east that was up to 24mi/gal. So whats it at today? about 24.5mi/gal. Are you kidding me? In a decade which brought us great technological advances, we can't get gas milage up more that one half of a mile?

On April 15th, the Knight Ridder reported that the Bush administration is eliminating 19-year-old international terrorism report after the 2004 report. This teaches a valuable lesson...if you do something and fail...don't let anyone know about it.

So I saw a commercial today in which the man identifies himself as a common sense republican. But that raises the age old question...if you have common sense...why are you a republican?

Almost time to go back home, but there is a great story about goldie (my co-worker Dave Steele). Well in calling the client and leaving messages to be returned instead of leaving the number we could be reached at, he inadvertantly left the number of the Bar we whent to the other night (Jimmy's Old Town Tavern www.jimmystavern.com where I came in 3rd in JOTTEROPERY, which is another story for another time). Quite funny to say the least
